Lucy, taking center stage since 2018, emerges from the chilly Atlantic waters on Groundhog Day, and her behaviour is observed to predict whether spring will arrive early or winter will persist. Every Feb. 2 since 2018, Lucy the Lobster has crawled out of the ocean on the North East Point waterfront on Cape Sable Island in the Lobster Capital of Canada – a.k.a. the Municipality of Barrington – and with help perched herself on top of a wooden lobster trap for her Groundhog Day prediction. Lucy the lobster has been making her Groundhog Day predictions for a few years to kick off the Lobster Crawl. In 2020 Bill Murray, star of the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, even chimed in about Lucy in an article in the Wall Street Street Journal. Murray said he saw nothing wrong with tweaking the groundhog tradition. Instead of a groundhog, event organizers brought Lucy the Lobster to make a winter weather prediction, a Facebook video shared on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 2, shows. Crawling out of the water On a day normally reserved for groundhogs, Lucy the Lobster will take the spotlight in Barrington. For the fifth straight year, Lucy will make her way out of her crate on the Cape Sable Island Causeway tomorrow at 8 a.m. Director of Marketing and Tourism for Barrington Suzy Atwood says Lucy has become very popular.
