Phil decides to be kind this time and brings coffee for his colleagues. That wasn't the only change he made. There was also a voiceover from Phil explaining his predicament and another big twist ending you never saw coming At the end of Groundhog Day, Phil Connors learns to use the time he has to enhance his life and use his abilities to help others, making him a popular figure in Punxsutawney, finally winning the heart of Rita, and breaking the endless repeating loop of Groundhog Day. He made himself miserable this way, crafting himself a living hell that got worse every day. On the surface, he was a cool, high-income professional, but beneath he was constantly filled with self-hate and a need to make others believe he was above them. What is Not to mention all the things he'd say or do that could get him in hot water, he wouldn't care much about what people think of him because it's all just reset and everyone forgets the next day. Of course, by the end he's this seemingly perfect and benevolent person that does everything to help people. Over time, the clock radio becomes a sort of Doomsday bell, endlessly signaling to Phil that he has failed to escape the endless cycle of Groundhog Days. We can see this especially in the way Harold Ramis at one point makes the number of the clock look huge and the sound of its numbers flipping over (this was before digital clocks) echo. He's a motherfucking groundhog and he decides when the seasons change. The genius behind Groundhog Day, as LFTS notes, is how "in order to drive the protagonist to change, the script imprisons him in a place that will constantly be attacking his flaw." So how exactly does he change? Needless to say, he doesn't learn the first time. He tries to exploit the system, but he just gets bored.
