Inciting Event: After covering Groundhog Day and being stuck in Punxsutawney, Phil wakes again at 6AM to his clock radio playing “I’ve Got You Babe,” the same song (a recurring motif of the film) as the previous day . He realizes it is not a radio mistake or deja vu but the same day again, a repetition of Groundhog Day—an aberration Groundhog Day is a 1993 American fantasy comedy film directed by Harold Ramis from a screenplay by him and Danny Rubin.Starring Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, and Chris Elliott, it tells the story of a cynical television weatherman covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, who becomes trapped in a time loop, forcing him to relive February 2 repeatedly. He just wants to get the work done and go home like he does every day of his life. 1. INCITING INCIDENT. At Gobbler’s Knob, the groundhog “Phil” sees a shadow and “predicts” that the winter will last six more weeks. People are depressed, but Phil doesn’t care, he just wants to leave immediately. This is also the case in Groundhog Day. We meet our main character Phil who is a narcissistic and self-centred weatherman and who very much hates having to go to Punxsutawney to report about Groundhog Day. In a time loop story, this first stage has an additional role: to establish the anchors for the audience. A plot that in its most basic form has been replicated countless times since the popularization of Groundhog Day, the film follows weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) stuck in a hellish 24-hour loop on Groundhog Day in the obnoxiously optimistic and positive Punxsutawney, Philadelphia.
