Phil Connors The 1993 comedy Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray is a wonderful classic film, but there is one odd, unusual scene that has always stood out to me and opens up a question about the time loop that Murray’s Phil Connors is stuck in Phil learns the fragility (and preciousness) of life through his repeated and futile attempts to save a dying, homeless old man whom he was mean to in the first years of his stay on Groundhog Day. This is especially heartbreaking because the old man looks EXTREMELY happy and grateful from the very first moment Phil meets him in the evening. They arrive in town a day before the festival, and Phil’s Groundhog Day starts early at 6 am. The morning kicks off with Phil listening to a weather report on the radio, which predicts a blizzard in Punxsutawney. Phil reluctantly dresses for Groundhog Day and feels disdain for the festival and its concept. Happy Groundhog Day, everybody! Punxsutawney Phil did NOT see his shadow on Tuesday, meaning we're going to have an early spring (and we'll NEED it after all that snow).
