Groundhog Day was shot using Panavision cameras on 35mm film and has been scanned, cleaned up and finished as a 4K Digital Intermediate thanks to Sony Pictures. It is this 4K DI that has been used here for this Ultra HD Blu-ray . Vital Disc Stats: The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Just in time for its 25th anniversary - and February 2nd - Sony has given Groundhog Day the sparkling 4K UHD treatment arriving in a two-disc 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital HD set. Pressed onto a Region Free BD-66 disc, the 4k UHD and Blu-ray's are housed in a standard sturdy two-disc black Ultra-HD case In keeping with Sony’s string of SteelBook 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases, Groundhog Day is the latest to score the slightly improved Dolby Vision treatment. As I said in my 2018 4K review, the film looks great but given the drab wintery vibe it’s not exactly a title that’s going to blow your hair back but it’s certainly better than past Blu-ray and DVD releases. Happily given the quality of the film, Sony’s 35mm to 4K HDR digital master conversion of Groundhog Day is one of its best. The film often looks like it was made just yesterday rather than 25 Groundhog Day received a new 4K remaster for its 2018 Ultra HD Blu-ray release. This version is derived from the same source and now includes Dolby Vision HDR. It should also be noted that the original Ultra HD release was presented on a BD-66 disc. This version is on a BD-100. I have seen Groundhog Day countless times in standard and high Groundhog Day 30th Anniversary Edition is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray and Digital. Note: Images presented in this review are not reflective of the image quality of the 4K UHD Blu-Ray. Disclaimer: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has supplied a copy of this disc free of charge for review purposes. Groundhog day has always been a more muted color grading, and its not dramatically different. Audio is also a little better I'd say. Overall: A 5 to 15% upgrade in picture quality makes this disc the definitive release and the best the film has ever looked, but not dramatically so. The audio is a direct port from the 2018 disc, thus my comments on the mix will be copied over from that review. I was actually a little surprised when I saw that Sony had given Groundhog Day an upgrade to Dolby Atmos from the 5.1 TrueHD track of 9 years ago. Not because I begrudge them for giving us next gen audio, but that this was just not a Groundhog Day was shot and completed on 35mm film back in 1993, and Sony has gone back and created a new 4K scan from those 35mm elements and regraded using HDR10.
