Currently, the Staten Island Zoo’s resident prognosticator is ready for his annual Groundhog Day ceremony. The free event, which will be open to the public, takes place at the Zoo on Sunday, Feb. 2. Chuck’s Groundhog Day appearances have a dramatic history, which was further enhanced in 2014 when de Blasio dropped a stand-in groundhog named Charlotte. A new safety rule was put in place at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton after the event, stating that Chuck must only be held by the designated handler. Phil isn't the only weather-predicting groundhog. Shout out to General Beauregard Lee in Georgia, Buckeye Chuck in Ohio, and Staten Island Chuck in New York. However, Phil is the most famous, and Groundhog Day Celebrations occuring in 2025.
