In real life, Essex Ed has led the Groundhog Day Parade in Essex Village for over four decades. At this annual appearance, Ed reveals his secret identity. Parade-goers beat the winter doldrums by beating their own drums (or pots, pans, spoons and spatulas) and even don their groundhog gear to cheer for the groundhog and spring. What is Groundhog Day? People flock to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 2 every year to be a part of the celebrations revolving around Punxsutawney Phil's winter forecast.
